CIRES: Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences
CIRES introduces its collaborative research and education program in the diverse field of earth system sciences. At this expansive website, students and educators can discover the Institute's numerous projects in the areas of climate system variability, geodynamics, planetary metabolism, and regional processes. CIRES discusses its five centers, which incorporate scientists with shared interests from within CIRES as well as from other departments at the University of Colorado and outside of the University. The website presents CIRES's latest news, research findings, and its seminar series about the relationship among policy, politics, and science in the White House.
Council on Environmental Quality
Within the Executive Office of the President, the CEQ leads the Administration's effort to reinvent environment and natural resource programs. The National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) instructed the CEQ to ensure federal agencies meet their obligations under the Act. The CEQ publishes information about NEPA cases and the Annual Report, which reports on environmental quality trends and data.
CSIRO Marine Research
Offered by Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), CSIRO Marine Research Web site contains multiple levels of valuable information. The organization's mission is to "understand its oceans by conducting research in the sustainable use of Australia's marine resources, the ocean's role in climate, and the effective conservation of the marine ecosystem integrity." Visitors will find current news articles, research material including free modeling software, and various data and related products such as remote sensing information and publications. The strength of the site lies in the adaptability of its offerings to research and researchers around the world.

Environmental Science and Engineering for the 21st Century: The Role of the National Science Foundation
This report (NSB00-22) makes the following recommendations: the National Science Foundation (NSF) should consider basic environmental research, education, and scientific assessment among the agency's highest priorities, and it should enable a coordinated, digital, environmental information network. The rationale for the recommendations and a description of how they may be implemented is included. The report is available in PDF format online and in a print edition.
League of Conservation Voters
The LCV advocates for "sound environmental policies" and works to help elect "pro-environmental candidates who will adopt and implement such policies." Its Presidential Scorecard tracks the administration in its handling of environmental issues. The league publishes the annual National Environmental Scorecard, which documents how members of the U.S. Congress voted on environmentally related legislation. At the website users will find a link to the previous years' scorecards, which are searchable by state or member name and summaries of legislative action by topic.
National Renewable Energy Laboratory
NREL is a leading center for renewable energy research, one of several U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories. It is developing new energy technologies to benefit both the environment and the economy. Technologies include active and passive solar, photovoltaics, solar thermal, wind, biomass power, geothermal energy, alcohol fuels, and hydropower. The website includes information about NREL's programs; a searchable library of NREL publications back to 1997, many of which are available at the site in full text; and a specialized library of more than 3,000 alternative fuels and advanced transportation publications from NREL, other government agencies, and private sources. Whenever possible, the specialized library publications are made available in full text at the site.
National Service Center for Environmental Publications (NSCEP)
EPA publications are maintained and distributed at this service center. Its catalog can be searched by author, title, date, subject, EPA publication number, or by words in the text. Ordering information is given on the site as well as information on how to retrieve foreign-language and out-of-print publications. Links are provided to additional sources of EPA and other federal government publications.

NWF is the nation's largest member-supported conservation group, uniting individuals, organizations, businesses and government to protect wildlife, wild places, and the environment.andquot; At the association's website researchers will find a free online newsletter, a What's News section, the work of the federation, and educational information.
Planet Pals
Created by designer, illustrator, and educator Judith Ann Gorgone, the Planet Pals Web site provides good material for young kids related to the health of the planet. The colorful pages contain basic information about the earth, energy, recycling, water conservation, pollution, and more. The fun and interactive Meet the Planet Pals area is especially interesting, where kids can listen to animated cartoons talk about various aspects of conservation. Even though the site is geared towards young children, they may have difficulty finding the educational specific pages by themselves; so, a parent's or teacher's assistance would most likely be helpful.
Resources of Scholarly Societies - Environmental Sciences
Compiled by University of Waterloo Library staff, this website lists environmental science societies in a number of countries. Societies are listed by their names in the language of their country, including Czech, Danish, Estonian, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish. The local chapters of national and international societies have not been listed. This unannotated listing of Web links contains ratings on the website and URL stability.
Sierra Club
Founded in 1892, The Sierra Club is one of the most prominent of environmental action organizations, with staff members who analyze issues, inform members, and lobby for the environment. Current priorities concern issues related to global warming, clean energy, air and water quality, and protection of wildlands. Selected full-text articles from Sierra, the organization's bimonthly magazine, 1995 to the present are included on the website, along with membership information, issues updates, and headlines.
The Nature Conservancy
TNC buys key land areas to manage for wildlife habitat and protection of fragile ecosystems. The organization also arranges conservation easements on other important lands. The website includes in depth information about TNC's programs, selected articles back to autumn 2006 from its journal Nature Conservancy, and book reviews.
The Wilderness Society
The Wilderness Society uses its "scientific expertise, analysis and bold advocacy at the highest levels to save, protect and restore America's wilderness areas." Founded in 1935, the association is headquartered in Washington, DC, and maintains 11 regional offices. An extensive library of society publications is available in full text on the website; these include handbooks, manuals, maps, science and policy briefs, and scientific papers. Full-text archives from the society's quarterly newsletter and its annual magazine are also available back to 2004.
Envirofacts Data Warehouse
The Envirofacts website offers direct access to several EPA databases. These include information about waste, air, water, toxics, radiation, land, and maps. Users can search across databases for information pertaining to specific zip codes, cities, counties, or states. The Enivromapper presents environmental data in a specific geographic area graphically.
EPA Student Center
This site provides background information on a wide variety of environmental issues including an online environmental map collection, information on environmental topics, a listing of major U.S. environmental laws, and a dictionary consisting of environmental terms.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) The Issues
Particularly useful for current issues relating to wildlife and fisheries, this site includes endangered species; migratory birds; and such other issues as the coral trade, water quality, prairie dogs, and invasive species.
